Christopher L. DeCort

Partner

Chris is a partner at Johnson, Newlon & DeCort. He concentrates his practice in the areas of business and complex commercial litigation, with an emphasis on contract disputes. Chris has practiced extensively in both state and federal courts, representing clients in employment disputes often involving non-compete, non-solicitation, and other restrictive covenant agreements, business tort cases involving fraud and breach of fiduciary duty, limited liability company member disputes, corporate litigation, breach of contract cases, construction and real estate disputes, and others.

Chris is rated “AV Preeminent” by Martindale-Hubbell, the highest peer rating for professional excellence and ethical standing. Since 2023, he has been named as a “Super Lawyer” by Florida Super Lawyers, after having been previously named a “Rising Star” from 2019 through 2021. Chris was recognized in the 2023 and 2024 editions of The Best Lawyers in America for his work in Commercial Litigation.

Chris earned his law degree from the Florida State University College of Law where he graduated magna cum laude, was inducted into the Order of the Coif, earned three book awards, and was a member of the Business Review and the Journal of Transnational Law & Policy. Prior to attending law school, Chris worked for six years as a commercial trade specialist for an international container shipping line in Tampa.

Chris sits on the Executive Council of the Business Law Section of the Florida Bar, currently serving as Chair of both the Rules of Court Committee and the State and Federal Court Judicial Liaison Committee. He previously served as Chair of the Business Litigation Committee and was named Business Law Section Member of the Year in 2023. A long-time supporter of local nonprofit organizations, Chris previously served as Chair of Tampa Connection and sat for many years on the Board of Directors of the Bob Sierra YMCA. The son of a retired Army colonel, Chris has called the Tampa Bay area home since 1992.
